After reading two other novels by Claire Fullerton, Dancing to an Irish Reel and Mourning Dove, I reached back in to my book bag of long overdue books that I been meaning to read. As this was the first novel, I anticipated that the author might show less experience and lack the quality of the prose found in later works, but I was mistaken. Once again, I was not disappointed by this author. Eloquent descriptions outlining the turn of the century etiquette allow the reader to experience the period. The plot weaves its way through time creating an enchanting tale that captivates the reader. You won't be able to put this book down!

This is an unusual story! Very unpredictable - I had no idea where it was going so I kept turning the pages. I liked the language throughout, in modern day, the language was realistic; in the past, fluid and romantic. This book made me want to visit the Monterey Peninsula because of its beautiful descriptions. A well written book. I see this book as a movie.
This is a very charming debut novel with engaging characters, sensory-rich detailed settings, and a well-crafted plot. The story moves effortlessly between two time periods one hundred years apart with two different casts of characters who share a mysterious bond. The author captured the essence of time periods and kept me both entertained and guessing till the very end.
A PORTAL IN TIME begins with a puzzle and ends with a shock. The story in between tells of two women, both artistic and strong-willed, who share a mysterious bond in time as well as a peculiar affinity for a lovely and haunting strip of California coast called Carmel-by-the-Sea. The author weaves a tale finely drawn, meticulously researched, and beautifully descriptive that draws the reader in from page one and does not let go until the final dramatic revelation.
I was captivated by a tale that is told so beautifully by an obviously intuitive woman. She's able to put moments of unusual clarity into words that are easily understood and envisioned by the reader. Her descriptions are so complete that I can see every scene in my head - and they're rich with color, sound and scents. The book makes me want to go straight to Carmel to see it all for myself. Not limited to a supernatural theme, 'A Portal In Time' is a story of love and respect between families, friends and lovers.
I truly enjoyed this book. It moves back and forth between two time periods, bringing them closer as the book moves toward the climactic ending, but the transition is done so seamlessly that it makes for a very easy and readable transition. The setting is gorgeous (California and an old hotel); the author really brings the scenes and scenery to life in vivid detail. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters and the past life experience, the concept of reincarnation, truly appeals to me. Highly recommended. Can't wait for the author's next book! I'll be first in line.
A Portal in Time is a wonderful read. The setting is beautiful, the two time frames depicted with absolute accuracy, and the main characters totally believable. Fullerton blends the unique mix of present and past into a marvelous story about life, love, healing.......and a bit of mystery. And she does it all with an ability to make the reader feel part of the story. Skill, mastery, artistry are all apparent in this spellbinding story of searching for self.

Despite the century between the lifetimes of the main characters, this book slips seamlessly from era to era. Claire Fullerton lends a unique and lovely voice to two distinctly different courtships, contrasting late Victorian and contemporary romance and binding them together with a thread of perennial love. Neither time period overshadows the other; instead, they fuse into a seamless and nuanced tale of love, triumph and tragedy across lifetimes. And although this type of story has the potential to become overwrought with connections and coincidence, Fullerton maintains a light but firm touch from start to finish. As in Dancing to an Irish Reel, she writes in such a way that you want to linger over every word like a glass of fine wine. A Portal in Time was every bit the delight I expected and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys tales of enduring love.
