This book is interesting and the mystery is unusual. However, the story would probably appeal more to readers familiar with the series due to the fact that so much of the drama involves events and people who appear in prior books. I am not sure that new readers will be properly invested in the numerous events that are extraneous, or only strenuously connected, to the primary mystery. Indeed, one of the primary mysteries involves the murder of a person who was pivotal in two earlier books and the fallout of that murder affects the main characters personally based on, in part, emotional and traumatic events that occurred in earlier novels. So much that happens in this book involves facts, characters, and events that appear and are fully explained before Hot Lava even starts. I personally started reading this series in the middle and was very disappointed in the book that I read first (Shattered Palms) due to how much of that story was based on important past history that was not adequately explained.

However, for readers of the series, the events pack a powerful punch. Indeed, the first crime presented in the book seems a little underwhelming given all of the turmoil occurring in Lei and Michael's lives. That turmoil is what grabs readers' emotions and real interest in my opinion.

I did have a few criticisms, mainly related to continuity issues. I can't describe many of the problems since it would reveal spoilers, but one example relates to whether a character was murdered given the lack of needle marks on her body, but that character was on a morphine drip so injecting a poison or an overdose could have easily been accomplished by injecting it into the IV tubing. In addition, some events and thoughts feel superficially facile. None of these detract substantially from the main action, but they create irritating little jabs to the story.

Overall, I recommend this book to fans of the series.

Engaging book. I know nothing about Hawaii (damn it) so enjoyed learning a little of the history and culture. The characters were engaging, although events in earlier books in the series had obviously played into character development and were never completely revealed. None-the-less, reading this book in isolation only detracted a bit from the experience.

The book was relatively free of the junk editing that plagues so many ebooks, and which, as a member in good standing of the editorial police, I never fail to mention. Since I hate it when reviewers go on and on about plot, I will just say this had an interesting one and I look forward to reading other books by author Neal.
This book needs to come with a warning!! Toby Neal you’ve incinerated my heart with the dark lava of emotions in this book! But in true Lei Texeira form, my heart survived and rose through the ashes broken and tattered but almost healed. I say almost because who knows what you have in store next! Lei and Michael have been through some pretty hard times and every time things seems to be on the up life reminds them that it can all change in a nanosecond. I love this series and I love Lei and Michael’s relationship. Who doesn’t want to be loved so deeply, utterly, and completely? Who doesn’t want amazing friends that love and support you and are totally willing to be completely and bluntly honest with you?! If you’re lucky enough to find all of that, treasure it. Treasure love and friendship because life is what it is and it’s a hella lot easier to ride that wave with the ones that love you unconditionally.

Another great novel in the Lei Crime Series by author Toby Neal - the seventh, not counting the two equally engrossing "companion novels" that follow other characters within her stories. Toby writes excellent, tight prose, with engaging dialog. The characters are all richly infused with both admirable traits and believable troubles and foibles, driven in no small part by Toby's career as a counselor. The plot runs at an eager pace, with each chapter leaving you wanting to read just one more -- you might not even be able to put it down. Just be sure to have a box of tissues handy with this one!

And as with every Toby Neal novel I can't wait for the next one!
