The Night Is Forever Krewe of Hunters Heather Graham 9780778315087 Books

Heather Grahams books are very formulaic - so if you like one you'll probably like the others. Some are better than others though. For me this wasn't one of the best but if you're like me - if Heather writes it - I'm gonna read it. It was OK - but it's not one I'll reread.

GOOD POINTS:
- The Krewe! I love seeing past characters come back for a supporting role in subsequent books. Even though they are a shadow of their former selves when they return (after all it's not their turn to be incredibly beautiful/rugged/can't keep their hands off each other) it's still nice to see them.

- this book is set on a Horses for Therapy ranch which is a bit different and although the group does hang around in a cafe at least this time they don't also hang around in a pub.

- a wide range of suspects and "whodunnit" wasn't really guessable this time

- horses and dogs! Can't go wrong with either of those IMO

- the sex scenes seemed a bit toned down this time (of course the characters still go at it like rabbits ALL night a few days after meeting - makes you wonder what kind of vitamins they're on - but it did seem like less)

- I think Heather did put some thought into the actual crime aspect of the story. The motive wasn't quite the "insanity" which she often uses (a motive I personally loathe and equate to the "and then he woke up" explanation kids like to use)

- the Hero didn't have a dead wife/fiancee!

- there was no one named Thayer

- no one was Irish or Scottish

- no sex in the shower (kitchen counter yes - but shower no - come on everyone likes a change :p)

WEAKER POINTS:

- Heather had quite a lot of local history included but I found it just slowed the pace of the story as she tended to write it in blocks. She's a big fan of "guided tours" as a way to introduce local history or legend - ie a couple of pages of someone spouting off stuff which may or may not interest the reader. It didnt really interest me this time.

- a couple of minor things which seemed more plot filler than the sensible course of action ie one of the Krewe speaks to a young artist on the phone about a portrait of a General which he created and then sold. The Hero and Heroine then drive to see him to ask about it. Why he couldn't have answered all the questions over the phone in the first place is a bit of a mystery! It was like "We need you to tell us who you sold the painting to - but I'm not going to just ask you on the phone -two people are going to drive all the way to see you to ask".... ummm.... ok.

- one of the books murders - involving an ipod - was fairly hard to swallow (but then a few of the other "attacks" were too lol)

- while Olivia KNOWS and works with all the suspects as in every Graham book - she didn't seem to be friends with any of them. Usually the hero will come along and join in to her social circle but this time it was pretty much him and her from the beginning. This jarred with me for some reason - most of them seemed fond of her - but I don't feel that she had ANY actual friends!

FORMULAS USED (formulas aren't bad - they are like knowing that if you follow your favourite chocolate recipe again you're still going to like the taste) :
- ghosts know they were murdered. They remember being murdered but they NEVER know who did it!
- Heroine is stunningly beautiful/slender yet spunky
- Hero is "ruggedly handsome"/brave/macho yet in touch with his feminine side.
- couple fall into bed within days of meeting and don't get back out of it for a long time ;)
- a bunch of suspects all of whom are known to the Heroine (but none of whom were very interesting this time unfortunately)

If you're a Heather fan - especially of the "Krewe" then reviews really don't matter. If you're a new reader - DON'T start with this one - choose a stand alone book or start with the first Krewe book. Bear in mind though that murders and ghosts aside Heather writes romances.

The Night Is Forever Krewe of Hunters Heather Graham 9780778315087 Books Reviews

As always, Heather Graham has produced another intriguing, enjoyable read. There is nothing to fault in The Night is Forever, but it felt a little predictable to me. Maybe it's time for a new series, or maybe Graham needs to try writing a standalone for a change. The true test of a book's appeal for me is whether I will sit up all night reading it instead of going to sleep. I had no trouble putting this one down and picking it up again later. Either I'm getting jaded, or the Krewe of Hunters series is losing its suspense.
I enjoy Graham's books enormously and have particularly loved the Krewe of Hunters series. I loved her General's ghost and the way in which the crimes begin to be solved through the assistance of ghosts and the Krewe who can interact with them. The love stories are always a given. The settings for this story were well described and gave you a feel of being right there. I highly recommend all of Graham's books, but do be sure to read the Krewe books and other series' as close together as possible so as to maintain enjoyment of the recurring characters.
I enjoy Heather Graham books, I believe I have read them all so far. I really like the premise to the Krewe books; FBI agents with ESP. She writes well and tells a good story. A little romance mixed together with mystery, suspense and a few spooks for good measure. My only complaint is that all the books are so similar. I can guess the outcome within the first couple of chapters. I would love some new twists that keep me guessing. Something different. Unfortunately, I beginning to get a bit bored and I truly hate for that to happen because I do like reading her books. Mix it up a little Ms. Gragam, please.
I usually like this author and I'm hoping this book was written by a 'ghost' writer. Ha ha - just remembered it's a book with ghosts in it. The plot was bland and boring - nothing was actually scary or interesting beyond the first chapter. There were endless trite details to the point that I kept forgetting what page I was on. How many times does she need to describe the food at the dinner, or repeat civil war history lessons out of a middle school text book? The characters had no emotional depth and the murder mystery made no sense. I gave up when one of the characters died by i-pod charger in the bathtub. That's not even physically possible! I skimmed to the end and was annoyed by the villain and the reasons the villain gave for killing several people they had known for years. Shoot. Hopefully the next book she writes will turn out better but I think I'd better just get it from the library and save my money.
The greatest percentage of this book takes place on a Horse Farm outside of Nashville. The Horse Farm is owned and run from Marcus Danby and he makes a point of saving horses that are no longer wanted or are being abused. The same goes for dogs and cats. There is also a Therapy Center for troubled young teens and drug abusers as well as alcohics. These kids come to the Horse Farm to work with the horses and therapists to learn bounderies.

When Marcus Danby dies he shows up as a ghost to his niece, Olivia, he tells her that he was murdered. She contacts the Krewe of Hunters for help. Malachi is her cousin and he knows that she can see ghosts. He hires a new member of a team, Agent Dustin Blake to be a patient at the Therapy Center to investigate the murder.

Soon other murders take place and the Krewe is called in.

I enjoyed this book very much but missed all the background information that Heather usually puts in regarding nearby cities and history. There was some, but not as much. Looking forward to reading more about the Krewe of Hunters!
