In the Hands of Children eBook HS Stone

I just finished reading this book as I headed up to San Francisco for a work meeting via the train & it was a perfect way to head into the city! Having been born & raised in the Bay Area, it was a lot of fun for me to read through Stone's depiction of the story's urban setting. As a San Jose native, I had the great fortune to picture the exact locations & areas that were referenced in the majority of the book. Costco near the airport - that's where I got my couch! I think this only added to the enjoyment of my reading experience, so good on him for doing a relatively spot-on job of giving the layout of the land.

Although a bit predictable, the story flowed very smoothly & the characters were well-rounded. Kids these days are incredibly smart & more independent than they get credit for, so kudos to Stone for recognizing that & breathing the life & tenacity that he did into those characters.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this post-apocalyptic, urban "Lord of the Flies" story & am excited to check out Stone's other works.

In the Hands of Children eBook HS Stone Reviews

For some reason I tend to really enjoy post-apocalyptic stories involving children. Reading how people work to survive in a world without all of our everyday conveniences is interesting. Reading about children/teenagers doing it is more interesting, in my opinion, because they don't have all the knowledge and experience that adults do. It's a bigger struggle for them but it's also a bigger reward when they succeed. That's why In the Hands of Children jumped out at me.

I liked the illness of the book. It was a great twist. Illnesses are always a terrifying thing especially when they're as gruesome as the H5N1 virus. This is one you can't outrun or escape. Everyone caught it. Now they're just a ticking time-bomb waiting for puberty to hit (as if puberty wasn't awful on its own). With other illnesses in similar books, the immune survivors will probably be okay in the end. They're immune so they've survived the worst of it. All they have to do it rebuild the world and repopulate it. Not so with the H5N1 virus. It's going to completely wipe out the human race. There will be no rebuilding the world and repopulating it. Everyone dies when they're able to procreate. See? Scary stuff.

I did enjoy the story even if it was a bit predictable. It reminded me a lot of Michael Grant's Gone. There were many similarities a problem occurring when you reach a certain age, kids being left on their own, bad kids taking over, the hero opposing the bad kids. This book worked much better for me mainly because it was more realistic than the superpowers of Gone. The author relied a bit too much on telling instead of showing but it wasn't enough to make me stop reading.

The bottom line? It was enjoyable! If you liked Gone by Michael Grant, you're sure to enjoy this.

*I received a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review
I have to admit I kind of judged a book by it's cover with this one. It sounded it fantastic but the cover just didn't seem like something I could get into.
Let me tell you, I definitely got into it. Wow.

I loved the characters, at least most of them. But even the ones I didn't were exceptionally well written. I just dislike bullies, otherwise I'd of liked them just fine.

Of the main characters, I'm not sure I could pick a favourite.
They are so intertwined it's hard to see one with out the others.
I loved the bond between the sisters, Hannah and Amy.
They protect each other through out the book, with out words.
The bond doesn't change regardless of who comes into their lives or how things change. Despite everything they have been through and continue to go through family always comes first with them.

I loved Kyle for his strength. He chose to try to take care of those around him. Whether it was those around him dying, the sisters or other people along the way. He stands for what's right and defends the underdog.

I really enjoyed reading about the trio's travels in The hands of children. The world was throughly thought out, solid and interesting. Not to mention slightly creepy at times.
I wish we could have seen more of the after effects of the virus around the world.
What we did get to see felt like such a small window, and I was just so curious.

I was really impressed by the authors ability to keep the story realistic and not go over the top.
I mean lets face it, if the world is going to go through something like a global virus, then events that played out in the book are exceptionally possible. Including the ending.
That I won't spoil for those that haven't read the book yet. (Brilliant, just sayin')
I loved In the hands of children and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a new read.
Very similar story line to the purple moon book, but still kept me engrossed. .. .. .. .. .. ..
I started reading this book and literally could not put it down. Finished it in just over a day. Very interesting story, familiar but new at the same time. Easy to relate to the characters and a complete story line. Highly recommend for people who like stories like the Hunger Games. I think this would make a great movie.
I loved this book! The first great thing about this book is it has “NO ZOMBIES.” YAY! Furthermore, it gets your attention from the beginning and is an exciting and engrossing read. It’s an excellent book and well-written and if poor spelling and grammar distracts you, you’ll enjoy this book because if there are any errors, they are few, providing a smooth reading experience. Great book!
